Vaughn Starr: I have had a life-long interest in foreign exchange. As a high
school student, I spent a year abroad studying in Denmark. It was an experience that, perhaps more than
any other, has shaped who I have become. In my experience, exchange provided the opportunity to share ideas
and cultures – it also helped me clarify my own beliefs. Since my return from Denmark, now more than
20 years ago, I have always looked forward to the opportunity of hosting students myself. My wife, Lisa,
and I have now provided hosting for more than 30 students – some for a week or two – others for an entire school
year. For several years I had worked as a middle school teacher in a small parochial school teaching science
and history classes until forming my own business six years ago. Through the teaching experience, history
became a true personal passion which I have enjoyed sharing with those who pass through our home. The Starr
Home idea began took root in the summer of 2008 as I had begun to search my heart for a new calling upon my life in the midst
of an economic downturn that has really hurt my business as a Financial Advisor. Current economic conditions
no longer allow us to continue serving and hosting on an entirely voluntary basis – at least not how we would like to
do it – spending the time with our students and showing them so many special sights.

Lisa Starr: Although I spent many years as a health educator, my first love
has always been cooking and entertaining. As a mother of four grown sons, I’m used to cooking for
a crowd. Hosting international students in our home allows me to be both a teacher and a hostess at the
same time. I love sharing our culture with young people from other countries and seeing our world through
their eyes. I also treasure the many things I have learned from them!
